NYPD: 28-year-old man dies in police-involved shooting in Canarsie
The NYPD says a 28-year-old man died after being shot by an officer in Canarsie on Tuesday night.
Police say officers saw a suspicious Porsche with suspicious plates on the Belt Parkway just after 8 p.m.
Officials say the officers did a license plate check on the vehicle and determined the plates to be stolen.
It was then discovered that the vehicle was stolen out of Pennsylvania.
Police say when officers attempted to pull the vehicle over on Cropsey Avenue, the vehicle exited and then got back on the Belt Parkway going eastbound.
Police radioed ahead to adjoining precincts that the stolen vehicle was headed in their direction.
Officers tried to intercept the vehicle at Exit 13, when the Porsche sped onto the service road in the direction of several officers, who set up a road block to stop the vehicle.
Police say the Porsche came into close proximity to at least one of the officers, almost striking them.
Officials say an officer discharged one bullet and struck the driver of the vehicle.
They say the vehicle went one more exit to Pennsylvania Avenue, where it struck another police department vehicle.
Police say the passenger in the vehicle was apprehended, and officers tried to perform lifesaving measures on the driver.
They say the driver was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police say the driver was on federal probation for interstate transport of stolen vehicles out of Pennsylvania.
