A 29-year-old man died Friday after he was found unresponsive in a holding cell following his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court, according to the New York City Department of Correction.

The man, identified as Julian Pagan, was found unresponsive shortly before 6 p.m. and transported to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:37 p.m.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and we share our condolences with Mr. Pagan’s loved ones,” Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards said in a statement, adding that the circumstances surrounding Pagan's death will be investigated.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was "deeply saddened" by Pagan's death and said the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the incident.

Pagan's attorney, Samantha Brugger of The Legal Aid Society, said he had appeared alert and engaged in court just hours before his death.

She called on the city to provide Pagan's family with answers and a full accounting of what happened while he was in custody.

A spokesperson for the New York Attorney General's Office said the Office of Special Investigation is "conducting a preliminary assessment of the matter."

Pagan's cause of death remains under investigation.
