We are following breaking news for you this afternoon. Another earthquake has hit New Jersey, and it was felt in Westchester and Rockland County. The US Geological Survey says it hit just south of Hillsdale, which is just about 4 miles from Pearl River in Rockland County. If you know this community. It was a 2.7 magnitude earthquake. Let's get right to meteorologist Matt Hammer to talk more about it. Matt, you know, I felt it during our show in Yonkers around 12:15. Then I started. Calls from places like Mount Vernon, Pleasantville, Mount Pleasant, where a lot of people felt the same thing, and you can feel an earthquake like this over a wide area. It doesn't take a major earthquake obviously to be felt elsewhere from where the epicenter is, and this happened, of course, Saturday night, where a similar area about 10 to 12 miles south of this one near Hasburg Heights, New Jersey had an earthquake of around a 3 magnitude. That was Saturday night just after 10. o'clock. This one a little bit closer to Lower Hudson Valley and so more people probably felt this one likely not leading to any major damage when we're talking about a 2.7 here but still it's unnerving any time the ground shakes beneath your feet and that's exactly what happened not only just for New Jersey, but of course as we're getting getting those reports into the Hudson Valley and Rockland County, Westchester County, and elsewhere that you know this was felt even. Possibly as far as parts of Putnam County, this map here kind of estimates how far that earthquake was likely felt and so even a 2.7 magnitude earthquake can still be felt as far north as possibly even parts of Duchess County, certainly Orange County, and of course Rockland and Westchester, and that's where really we're getting the flood of reports in uh about feeling this type of earthquake. This just happened just after noon today, and it's just a little concern. Because it's not the only one in recent days, New Jersey has had several, and you remember last year, last April, how could you forget that 4.8 magnitude earthquake, which really just shook the entire tri-state area, far weaker than that was this one, but still it is concerning any time you kind of feel that ground shake and Lisa, uh we, we're gonna of course have much more information on this for you right now. I believe you have some experts too. All right, Matt, thank you. We want to continue our Team 12 coverage with Melanie Palmer now. She is in Scarsdale talking to people about what they felt in that community. Melanie. We are starting to get reaction from people here around Westchester about, as you said, what they felt during this earthquake earlier this afternoon. Some people tell us it felt and sounded like a very large truck passing by. Others didn't really think so much of it. But here in the Scarsdale Eastchester area, many people tell us it wasn't as powerful as that earthquake that hit over the weekend. However, it was still concerning and shocking to feel. Take a listen. All of a sudden we heard like a real shimmer, like a burst, a noise, and it went away in about 3 seconds and that was it, but it was loud. It was a loud burst. It's crazy. I don't know what's going on. I mean, the world is changing. There's a lot of things going on. Now that really has been the reaction from a lot of people we've been talking to, even ones who didn't feel it here in the Eastchester Scarsdale area. They're more just shocked to be hearing about another earthquake so closely with that other one that hit, like we said over the weekend. Now for the most part we have not gotten any reports of damages at all here in Westchester. We'll keep you updated throughout the day in Scarsdale, Westchester County, Melanie Palmer news 12.

Let's turn to Oliver Boyd with the US Geological Survey. Let's get an update now on what you know and how many of those felt reports that you just received. Yeah, so at this point we have about 2300 felt reports over a fairly large area, uh, you know, 50 miles up to the, to the northeast, and maybe 30 miles down to the southwest, and it's a bit smaller than Saturday's earthquake, so there are about 11,000 felt reports from that earthquake, uh, and no damage that I'm aware of that's been reported from either earthquake, but it's not unusual to have a small magnitude earthquakes, uh, scattered around the. Central and eastern United States. OK, since the time that this happened, talk to us about what you've learned about this latest earthquake, how deep it was, and any other important information for our viewers. Uh, well, it's, there's a fair amount of uncertainty in the depth, uh, but given some of felt reports it was probably relatively shallow. We report a depth of about 8 miles, but, uh, you know, it could be plus or minus 4 miles, uh, based on that estimate, and, uh, but you know, like we see a lot of earthquakes in the central and eastern US, they felt a fairly large distances, you know, due to the, the kind of the competency of the crust in the, in the region, um, so it's uh. You know, it can be shocking if you haven't felt them before. Uh, talk to us a little bit more about how you would compare this one to the one that happened on Saturday around 10 o'clock, a little after 10 o'clock. Do a comparison for us on, on the differences and similarities. Well, so it's located about 10 miles north of the one that happened on Saturday. Uh, it's just a slightly smaller earthquake, um, and it's possible that it may end up with more felt reports just because the time of day, so a lot of people are out and about, are awake, uh, and potentially could be reporting the earthquake, uh, on Tuesday morning as opposed to, uh, Saturday night. So, um. You know, but I mean other than that, it's uh it's fairly similar earthquake to what happened on Saturday. For people who are not familiar with the Felt report, can you talk a little bit more about that and how people can actually report something like this in the future if they happen to feel yet another earthquake? So the USGS has a system called Did You Feel it. So if you search the internet for USGS, Did you feel it, it'll lead you to a website where you can report the effects that you experienced. So whether, whether you felt the earthquake, or whether you didn't feel the earthquake, if you noticed any movement of furniture or Uh, shaking your chandeliers or or any other sort of felt effects and then that's sort of put on a scale to give us an idea of how intense the ground shaking was. OK. And why is it so important for you to receive these felt reports? Well, um, it, it helps us understand the sort of spatial distribution of ground motions. So a lot of times in the earthquakes in this area we see that they're kind of elongated along the Appalachians, uh, from the northeast to the southwest. Uh, it gives us an idea of of how much, um, the, the extent over which earthquakes are felt in the central and eastern US relative to the western US, so you know it's much, much larger area for a given size earthquake in the central and eastern US that it will be felt. Um, it can give us an idea of of how the intensities die off, um, which is pretty important for for modeling of the ground motions and estimates of earthquake hazards. So yeah, these, these digi field reports are exceptionally important for for us to be able to to analyze the earthquakes in the uh across the United States. And as you analyze that data from the reports, what is next for you and your team today? Well, uh, to, uh, inform people about the, the earthquake and previous earthquakes, uh, recent earthquakes in New Jersey, um, to let them know that, uh, You know, generally these earthquakes are relatively small and, uh, you know, not, not nothing to be worried about, um. And then to add them to our data set so we can continue to uh uh better understand earthquakes in the ground oceans in the central and eastern US.
