Family, friends and domestic violence advocates gathered in Allerton to honor the life of 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez, the Bronx mother police say was pushed from a 15th-floor apartment building while holding her 8-month-old daughter.
A sea of purple filled the streets as members of the Rough Riders motorcycle group joined loved ones for a candlelight vigil, prayers and a purple balloon release.
For the first time since the tragedy, Ramirez’s heartbroken family spoke publicly.
Her mother thanked the community for its overwhelming support, saying there is tremendous pain and sadness in their hearts. She also said her daughter died saving her baby girl until the very end.
The 8-month-old, named Novalee, remains hospitalized, fighting for her life.
Police have arrested 31-year-old Angel Carrasco, Ramirez’s ex-boyfriend, and the father of her child.
Carrasco is accused of pushing the mother and baby from the 15th-floor apartment building. He faces several charges, including murder and attempted murder. He has not yet been arraigned and remains hospitalized.
Loved ones remembered Ramirez for her infectious smile, kindness and the love she shared with everyone around her.
Domestic violence advocates also used the vigil to urge anyone experiencing abuse to recognize the warning signs and seek help.
Several more vigils are planned this weekend as the community continues to honor Ramirez’s memory and pray for her daughter’s recovery.
