12ds agoSaturday marked four months since a five-alarm fire tore through an Allerton apartment building and left more than 100 tenants displaced.
Tenants told News 12 on Saturday that they’re still living in shelters and fighting for answers.
The FDNY said the fire on Jan. 10 broke out on the top floor of the six-story structure at 2910 Wallace Ave.
The Red Cross stepped in with temporary housing and extended the tenants’ stay several times, but that has since expired.
In March, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced federal funding through low-interest loans, but several tenants said they don’t qualify.
Felix Colon was one of those tenants and said his family of five continues to struggle.
“My life is not good in this moment,” said Colon. “I live in the shelter with all of my family. It’s not good, a lot of stress.”
News 12 reached out to the management office for a comment and an update on the building. As of Saturday evening, News 12 had not received a response, but management previously said they are providing apartments in buildings that they own to families asking to transfer to other housing.
