A program is granting NYC Public School students with a college scholarship account.
Through the grant, nearly every student in a New York City public school receives a scholarship account, with an initial $100 scholarship investment for their college and career future.
In the Bronx alone, more than 70,000 students have over $11 million invested.
Dr. Meisha Porter says all a parent needs to do is activate their child's account.
"You can go online and activate it yourself but in our schools, our parents coordinators are ready to help parents make that happen," says Porter.
Each student's account starts with a $100 investment, and there are opportunities to earn more over time, encouraging students to dream big about their futures.
"Having this investment as a third or fourth grader helps young people know, that they have the recourses to go to college and the pathway to get there," says Porter.
Starting in the 2021-2022 school year, any student enrolled in an NYC public school, receives a scholarship account that is set aside for college and/or career training.
Principal Luis Quan says this program makes all the difference in his students attitudes toward college.
"Knowing that there's money there and that other donors are going to invest in our students just creates a sense of possibility among them," says Quan.
