Mayor Zohran Mamdani says a woman carrying multiple knives stabbed two people on 7th Avenue in Times Square on Monday afternoon.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that the incident began near West 41st Street around 4:30 p.m. where the suspect, who was armed with two knives, approached a man who was just exiting the subway and was waiting with his wife and was about to cross the street.

Tisch said a witness at the scene told investigators that they saw the suspect take out two knives from a red Target bag before approaching the victim.

She said the suspect waved the knives before stabbing a 68-year-old man in his abdomen.

Tisch said that victim is currently in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.

The police commissioner said the suspect then headed toward 42nd Street and approached a 32-year-old woman.

Tisch said the suspect stabbed the woman in the abdomen.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Witnesses flagged officers, who then located the suspect on 7th Avenue between West 42nd and West 43rd streets.

Tisch said the officers engaged in a dialogue with the suspect for approximately four minutes.

The commissioner said the suspect refused to drop knives, adding that she would rather kill both the officers.

Officers initially tased her, which was unsuccessful and then the officers opened fire.

The woman was identified as a 49-year-old Queens resident who has a documented mental health history with the NYPD.

She had no history of arrests.

Victims won't be identified until pending family notification.

Tisch said it was an unprovoked stabbing.
