A 26-year-old man died Thursday morning after falling from elevated train tracks in Fordham, according to the NYPD.
The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. near Jerome Avenue and West 184th Street.
News 12 obtained exclusive surveillance video showing the moment the man fell from the elevated train tracks onto the street below. The footage also shows officers reaching him in less than two minutes and immediately beginning life-saving efforts.
Police confirmed the man fell from the elevated tracks but did not confirm witness accounts that officers had been pursuing him before the fall. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told News 12 they saw the man running along the elevated tracks while officers approached from opposite directions. They said he appeared to jump from the tracks and attempted to grab a nearby tree to break his fall but was unable to hold on before striking the ground.
The man's identity has not been released pending notification of his family.
At the scene, first responders left behind medical equipment as investigators worked around dried blood and debris beneath the elevated tracks.
One witness said he heard a loud crash before seeing officers attempting to save the man's life.
