An empty lot on Powers Avenue in Mott Haven is set to become a new 100% affordable housing development, and city leaders say it will move faster than past projects. Deputy Mayor Leila Bozorg joined the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Department of City Planning to announce the project named "Powerhouse Apartments."
The building will feature 84 units, including 24 studios, 18 one-bedrooms, 31 two-bedrooms and 11 three-bedrooms. The building is nestled between a school and a park. The building will also have ammenities like a theater, workforce development space, outdoor green space and an all-electric design. City officials say the development is the first to go through the new Expedited Land Use Review Procedure, or ELURP, which shortens the approval process for certain housing projects from about seven months to 90 days.
"We're here kicking off the disposition approval process at a time when we know that we need to be adding much more affordable housing all across the city, and in every neighborhood to address our housing crisis," Bozorg said.
Officials say construction could wrap within about three years and be ready for residents.
