Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Moore Street Market in Williamsburg on Monday to raise awareness about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and encourage eligible New Yorkers who recently lost assistance to reapply.
The visit comes as the city expands outreach efforts to help residents navigate new federal work requirements that have impacted access to SNAP and Medicaid benefits. Beginning Oct. 1, New Yorkers who lost SNAP benefits due to the new rules became eligible to reapply.
“Food should not be a luxury in New York,” Mamdani wrote in a statement. “SNAP serves as a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of food-insecure households across our city.”
According to the administration, approximately 26,500 New York City residents lost SNAP benefits this year because of new federal work requirements. In response, the city has launched a citywide outreach campaign and introduced new online resources to help residents understand the requirements, determine whether they are affected and complete the re-enrollment process.
“When we’re talking here about SNAP cuts, we know that 26,500 New Yorkers lost their SNAP benefits,” Mayor Mamdani said. “Another 900,000 New Yorkers are at risk of losing their health insurance as a result of H.R. 1. We are looking at every option we have to deliver for New Yorkers who are being priced out by the cost of groceries,” Mamdani said.
The administration also highlighted recent investments in nutrition programs, including a 40% increase to the city’s Health Bucks program. The initiative matches SNAP spending at participating farmers markets and farm stands, helping New Yorkers access fresh fruits and vegetables while supporting local food vendors.
The push comes as food insecurity remains a challenge across the city. According to the city, among food-insecure adults, nearly eight in 10 report difficulty affording balanced meals, while 18% said they had not eaten any fruits or vegetables the previous day.
