Police are investigating after skeletal remains were found in a wooded area on the outskirts of Van Cortlandt Park near 233rd Street. Officials say a 911 call came in just after 11:30 a.m., prompting officers to respond to the scene, where they discovered human remains and launched an extensive investigation that lasted for hours.
From a distance, flashing police lights could be seen through the trees as investigators combed the area.
Medical examiners were spotted on their knees, carefully scooping dirt into buckets and collecting evidence piece by piece.
Several markers were placed on the ground, highlighting key spots where investigators concentrated their search.
Police say they do not currently know how long the remains may have been there, and no information has been released about the person’s identity or what may have led to their death.
