Residents at Donizetti Place in Co-op City say they have been without gas in their homes for two weeks.
They say they received notices from building management that says it could be six months or more until service is restored.
Ivy Unger lives in one of the three 26-story buildings affected by the gas outage that started on April 28. She says she loves to cook and since then, she's had to find other ways to eat without a stove.
"I bought canned stuff to heat up in the microwave. I bought a microwave mug so I could heat up some water to make some tea, coffee," said Unger.
She says that due to health reasons, she can't continue to eat microwaved food.
"You can't cook fish in the microwave. Only TV dinners, that is. And, you know, loaded with sodium," she said. "I'm going to go buy a grill with a griddle so I can cook things."
No gas also means residents lose access to the laundry in the basement - which means they have to walk to another complex. She says little is being done about the inconvenience.
"Next month, one time, they're only giving us $100 off our carrying charge. But what about the months going after that and forward. They should accommodate us more," she said.
Unger is asking for more help from Riverbay management because she is overextending her budget to adjust to a problem she did not make.
Con Ed tells News 12 the gas outage is due to a gas leak.
News 12 reached out to Riverbay about getting more help to residents, it responded saying:
"Riverbay Corporation has contracted with a Certified Master Plumbing contractor that will facilitate the repairs and upgrades needed in the buildings in order to have the gas services restored in the apartment. To facilitate the repairs and upgrades, Riverbay Management must gain access to all 500 apartments and laundry room and this process will begin Tuesday, May 13th beginning at 8:00 am – 8:00pm. The master plumbing contractor will be knocking on doors, to gain access to replace the gas valves, hoses and place the valves in the closed position. All employees of the contractor will have Riverbay I.Ds visible to shareholders. In addition to replacing the gas valves and hoses, upgrades are required for the 20 gas risers located throughout the buildings which will require wall breaks in certain apartments."
