A man is now facing charges in the shooting death of a 7-month-old girl in Bushwick and police continue to search for a second person they say was involved.
Police say 21-year-old Amuri Green is in custody and charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The shooting happened around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Moore and Humboldt streets.
Investigators say two people were riding a moped through the area — going the wrong way — when the person in the back pulled out a gun and fired multiple times.
At the time, several adults and children were standing on the corner.
The baby, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was sitting in a stroller when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet.
Police say her father rushed her to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, but she did not survive.
Investigators believe the shooting was gang related.
After the gunfire, the two people on the moped sped off but crashed just a few blocks away. Police say Green, who they believe was the shooter, was taken to the hospital and later taken into custody.
Authorities say they have identified the driver of the moped but have not released that person’s name. That person is still being sought.
Community members are now stepping in, hoping to help move the case forward.
Leaders with the Crisis Action Center announced a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
“A parent should never have to bury a7-month-old,” said Rev. Kevin McCall.
Outside a nearby deli, a small memorial is growing with candles and flowers as neighbors mourn the loss.
“It’s very, very sad to everyone,” one neighbor said.
Others say the violence is leaving people shaken.
“The baby got shot, so it’s a lot. It’s just too much. It’s not safe to walk into a deli or walk anywhere,” another neighbor said.
Police say they have recovered the moped and are continuing to search for the second person involved.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
