3 Bronx teens charged with murder in connection to fatal shooting of 16-year-old in Kingsbridge
Three Bronx teenagers were charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in Kingsbridge, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark says.
Zion Martinez, 19, and brothers Anthony Caballero, 19, and Shawn Caballero, 17, faced a judge for the first time Friday. The trio is accused of firing multiple rounds down West 238th Street on Feb. 11, fatally striking Christopher Redding and injuring two other teens.
Authorities say a fourth person remains on the run.
Gunfire rang out around 5 p.m., sending a group of teens running for cover and striking Redding in the back. He died at the hospital.
Prosecutors say a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were both struck in the legs. They are expected to recover.
Redding’s family told News 12 he loved football and had a bright future.
According to officials, Shawn Caballero was the first teen to face charges for the shooting. The NYPD took him into custody on Feb. 14, and he was arraigned on March 9.
Martinez and the elder Caballero brother were captured in Connecticut by the Norwich Police Department.
Norwich police say they initially arrested Martinez on March 4 for possession of a controlled substance and discovered through the NYPD that he was wanted for murder.
Caballero was taken into custody on March 20 following a “large-scale arrest operation” by the Norwich police.
The 19-year-olds were arraigned Friday.
"A promising boy was cut down by a bullet and another boy and a girl were wounded as they ran from gunfire near a busy intersection at 5 p.m.,” said DA Clark. “The defendants are 17 and 19 years old. This is another heartrending loss of our young people to death, trauma and prison. We must stem the flow of illegal guns."
The teens each face additional charges, including manslaughter, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, assault and reckless endangerment.
They are due back in court on June 18.
